On Saturday, 19th April 2025, Year 8, Year 10 Fast, and Year 11 students assisted in running an event called the “5 Senses Rush.” I was assigned the role of taking photos, recording videos, and interviewing participants.
At 7:40 am, all participants and facilitators gathered in the courtyard before heading to our assigned stations. We were given our committee badges, and shortly after, we made our way to our respective stations. For my group and me, this was the library.
When each team arrived, I would begin by recording the group leader as they explained the game, followed by capturing the players as they started participating. After their designated time was up, I would approach the team, take pictures of them, and then ask questions about their experience. I would inquire about how their day was going, how they found the quiz, whether they encountered any challenging questions, and more.
In the end, everyone had a fun time and created lasting memories from this wonderful experience.
When I first found out that Year 8 and Year 11 students would be assisting with The 5 Senses Challenge, I thought, “Wait… we’re the facilitators?” I expected it to be a lot of work and, honestly, I just wanted to play instead.
However, once we got started, I realized how fun it was to help run the event. I was assigned to Station 9, where we played Taste Taboo, a game where teams had to describe taste-related words without using obvious clues. Hearing people try to hint at a word like “citrusy” without saying “lemon” or “sour” was hilarious.
I was in charge of keeping track of the scores and running up and down the stairs to report them to the scoreboard team. It ended up being quite a bit of work, but I also managed to capture some funny photos of the Year 7 teams during the event.
Even though I wasn’t playing, it still felt exciting—especially when teams got super into the game and started shouting out wild guesses. I also saw firsthand how much teamwork went on behind the scenes to make the event a success, and I’m glad I got to be a part of it.
Next year, though? I’m definitely looking forward to playing. I can’t wait to take on the challenge myself!

Our final full day of the exchange program began early in the morning, as we had to board the train from Bandung to Jakarta. The ride was very smooth and quiet, which gave us time to reflect on all the memories that were made this week and think about what we wanted to do on our last day in Jakarta. We arrived at around 11 AM, where we were greeted by the Nizamia High School team.
Our first stop was Nizamia Kindergarten, where we had lunch with some of the teachers, buddies, and students. It was a very pleasant gathering, filled with delicious Indonesian food, catching up, and even a karaoke session!
After lunch, we performed the Zuhur prayer in the musholla before continuing with our day. In the afternoon, we headed to Grand Indonesia with the Nizamia students for a final outing together. We spent time shopping and enjoying each other’s company, making the most of the few hours we had left together.
In the evening, we checked in at the Millenium Hotel and prepared for our official farewell. Saying goodbye to the NHS students was very bittersweet and emotional. Tears were shed, and we shared our final messages with one another. Even though it was difficult to part ways, we were all grateful for the beautiful memories and new friendships that had been built over the past week.
We ended the night by packing our bags, reminiscing with each other, and of course, getting some rest to prepare for the journey back home the next day.

We got up early for breakfast and had a variety of food to choose from: fried soun, chicken curry, fried rice, and mixed vegetables. Unfortunately, a few of us missed out since they woke up late—no surprise there!
After breakfast, we got ourselves ready by 8 a.m. so we could hop onto our bus and begin our journey to the zoo. The ride was pretty long, so naturally, most of us took a nap along the way.
We arrived at the zoo around 9 a.m., though some of us were still half-asleep and a bit disoriented—until we saw a hippopotamus! That definitely woke everyone up. From that moment, the zoo visit was all fun and excitement. We loved meeting all the animals, but one unexpected highlight was stumbling upon a cat café. There were so many adorable cats inside, and the staff told us there were 25 cats in total!
We spent the whole day at the zoo, from morning until afternoon. Among the animals we saw were lions, orangutans, tigers, hornbills, hippos, a variety of birds, cheetahs, and zebras. One particularly cute animal was the binturong. And of course, we can’t forget the llama—although most of us kept our distance, worried it might spit at us!
The biggest highlight of our zoo visit was getting to feed a lion. At first, none of us were particularly interested in feeding any animals. But once we saw the opportunity to feed a lion, we rushed over to the staff and eagerly paid for the experience. It was incredibly exciting and something totally new for us!
After the zoo, we got back on the bus, exhausted but happy, and headed off to get lunch.
Following Friday prayers at Istiqlal Mosque, we went to Bajamba Padang Restaurant for lunch. While the dishes looked delicious, most of us ended up ordering plain rice because the original dishes, with their spicy sides, were a bit too fiery for our taste buds! Still, it was a flavorful and enjoyable experience.
Next on our itinerary was Trans Studio Bandung, one of Indonesia’s most exciting amusement parks. We pushed our limits on roller coasters that went backwards, thrilling swinging rides, and attractions that tossed us in every direction. Our screams turned into laughter as we conquered each ride together. Afterward, we explored Trans Studio Mall, where we grabbed more food to recharge and did a bit of shopping.
Later in the day, we stopped by a local batik shop, which offered a wide range of Batik Bandung, Batik Indonesia, kebayas, and t-shirts—all at amazing discounted prices. Many of us picked up souvenirs for friends and family (and maybe a few extras for ourselves too).
As the day came to an end, we returned to the hotel early to rest in preparation for an early train the next morning. But since it was our last night in Bandung, we made the most of it. We karaoke’d on the bus, shared stories and laughter late into the night, and a few of the boys even squeezed in a quick dip in the hotel pool.
We fell asleep with full hearts and tired bodies—grateful for the unforgettable time we had, yet a little sad to be leaving such a beautiful city. Bandung gave us memories we’ll cherish forever

At the start of the fifth day, we woke up knowing that we would be leaving our second home and the family with it. We got ready, wearing our baju cara melayu for our performance as a goodbye. We ate our final breakfast with our host family. After the final meal with the host family, we left our homes and said salam, to some, perhaps, who would not cross paths again.
When we arrived at Nizamia, we had one last practice to make our performance as memorable as possible. After a short while, the students walked in, some with excitement, some with sadness. Finally, we started. Jazmi read Surah Al-Mulk 12-16, Amir gave his speech, leaving students and teachers with tears running down their cheeks. Then we performed our dance “Adai-adai,” telling the stories of Brunei’s fishermen. Afterwards, we played Indonesia’s traditional instruments. Lastly, we performed our farewell to the students and sang See You Again by Charlie Puth. The sound of cheers filled the auditorium. Our teachers then received their gifts, and we received flowers to give to our host mothers. Some of us gave our souvenirs to our host families on the first day, and some on the last. We all took pictures, holding back our tears, but some could not hold back because of the thought that we might never see each other again. We then grabbed our luggage and went on the bus, with each step thinking about the moments we had together. The bus then drove off, leaving us with a final glance at our buddies.
We were headed towards the KCIC station. Once we arrived, we changed out of our baju cara melayu and baju kurung into more comfortable clothes. We ate our lunch at the station—some ate the food given to us by the guide, while others ate at Subway. Some also stopped by a convenience store to buy snacks. After that, we grabbed our luggage and boarded the train. The train was the whoosh train: the fastest in Indonesia, reaching speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour. It was a 30-minute ride, but finally, we arrived in Bandung.
Once in Bandung, we immediately headed towards our hotel, Gino Feruci Braga. Once we settled our luggage in our rooms, we went onto our bus and headed to the Mycelia Forest. It was an hour’s drive, and while waiting, the guide told us ghost stories and other facts about Indonesia. Once we arrived, we took our ablution and prayed, then two people put on glow-in-the-dark face paint. We took many pictures of the Mycelia Forest as it was a first-time experience in such an environment.
We then boarded our bus and headed for dinner. The restaurant we went to was Dharmada Sunda. It was unique as we had to sit at a table surrounded by water. The food was great and tasty, and we played with the swings there before we left and headed back to the hotel.
Once at our hotel, some went back to their rooms, while others went outside to explore the streets. We saw many different things, such as ghost cosplayers and anime cosplayers, to name a few. We bought a few snacks and drinks at a convenience store and went back to our rooms to get a good night’s rest.

Upon waking up in our hotel room on our second day, we spent the morning eating at the breakfast buffet. Afterwards, we checked out of our hotel and made our way to Nizamia High School, where we were expected to have our official meet and greet with all our buddies.
Once we arrived, we were greeted by the Nizamia staff at the entrance, where we encountered a small cat that seemed to regularly visit the school. Afterwards, we went upstairs and were welcomed by the students of Nizamia High School in the assembly area.
We were then introduced to our buddies, whom we would be living with for the next three days. Kasyful and I were paired with our buddy, Rizky Ramadhan, who welcomed us with open arms. Furthermore, Rizky, along with two other Nizamia students, gave all the boys a school tour, showing us all their facilities ranging from a Fashion and Design Room to their Barista Class.
Afterwards, each of us went to our respective buddies to have our Class Immersion in their classes. Kasyful and I attended Japanese, Sociology, and Indonesian Studies. Throughout this process, we bonded with the class and teachers, exchanging insights about our cultures and schools.
Between these classes, we took a break to visit the Kindergarten Campus, where we learnt how to play traditional Indonesian instruments.
We ended the day with a ceremony introducing the schools and the host families whom we would be living with. Afterwards, we were brought to our respective houses and had dinner to end the day

On the day of departure for the student exchange program with Nizamia High School (NHS), Jakarta, we arrived at the airport early in the morning. First, we checked in our luggage, and after that, a short briefing was conducted by SMY teachers to go over the trip details. This was followed by a Doa recitation led by Ustaz Dr. Hj Samsul, praying for a safe and smooth journey. Once the briefing ended, we bid farewell to our parents and proceeded into the departure hall.
After a brief wait, we boarded the plane. The flight to Jakarta lasted approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. Upon arrival at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, we were warmly welcomed by NHS teachers. We were then transported by the school’s bus to the hotel, where we were given time to rest and freshen up before the evening program.
Around 5 PM, the school bus arrived to pick us up for our first visit to Nizamia High School. The journey to the school took about 10 minutes. Upon arrival, we were impressed by the school’s beautiful and prestigious environment. A meet-and-greet session was held, where we were introduced to our assigned NHS buddies.
The evening ended with a warm dinner, where both groups of students had the chance to interact and bond in a relaxed setting. After dinner, we returned to the hotel to rest and prepare for the upcoming days of the exchange program.

The rehearsals for this year’s National Day were filled with energy, dedication, and teamwork. We worked tirelessly, refining our movements, with our coach’s unwavering support guiding us through challenges.
The marching bands, core performers, and military displays highlighted the strength and unity of our nation, under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah; his dedication has always inspired us. Surrounded by fellow performers, we felt immense pride, celebrating our shared values and commitment to our country.
Being part of the core performance taught us teamwork, perseverance, and national pride. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a memorable celebration, under the guidance of our beloved Sultan. As we reflect on this experience, we cherish every moment, knowing that we amy not always have the chance to participate again in the future. This made us even more appreciative of the memories we have created. We are proud to be Bruneians.

CCA Day was an unforgettable whirlwind of energy and excitement! From the very beginning, the atmosphere was buzzing as everyone gathered for the CCA registration . The day kicked off with icebreaker games according to our team houses that had us all laughing and working together. As the games progressed, the team-building challenges brought out our competitive spirit. We strategized, cheered, and celebrated.
The chaos of participating in the activities made it tiring, but the shared laughter and excitement kept us motivated. Highlights included leadership skills and trust-building exercise that really pushed us out of our comfort zones.
Despite the exhaustion, the enthusiasm and support from teammates made every moment worth it. By the end of the day, we were tired but filled with unforgettable memories and a stronger sense of connection amongst all team houses. It was a perfect blend of chaos and fun that brought us all closer together!

It was my very first day of secondary school, and I felt really nervous since I was a new student at Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Secondary School. We started the day by going to the Multi-Purpose Hall for a talk. As I looked around the hall, I saw many faces I had never seen before. Everything felt so new and unfamiliar.
When we arrived, I registered my attendance with Teacher Aqidah, my class teacher, and then sat down with my dad. The first speech was given by the acting principal, Teacher Hidayat. After that, the Student Affairs Section explained the school’s rules and regulations. I listened carefully, even though it felt like a lot of information to take in at once.
During the lunch break, my dad left the hall, and I went to the school canteen. At first, I thought I was the only person who had moved from Jigsaw Primary School to Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Secondary School. But then I noticed there were other students from Jigsaw too! I felt much more comfortable knowing I wasn’t the only one, and it was nice to see familiar faces from my old school.
After lunch, we returned to the hall for an icebreaker activity. We sat in a circle, played games, and got to know other Year 7 students. We introduced ourselves, shared our hobbies, and chatted with each other. It was fun and made me feel more relaxed about meeting new people.
The next day, we took attendance again, and we learned the school song with help from the senior students. It was exciting to sing it together and be part of the school.
After that, we went on a library tour. During the tour, we played a bingo game where we had to guess the meanings of words and phrases. Then, the seniors took us on a tour of the school, showing us all the different areas. I enjoyed walking around and learning more about my new school.
Finally, we entered our 7 Alpha classroom. This was when we properly met Teacher Aqidah, introduced ourselves again, and set up some class rules and expectations. It felt nice to settle into our classroom, and I started to feel like I belonged.
I really enjoyed the orientation. Meeting new people, reconnecting with old friends, and exploring the school made me feel more excited and confident about starting Year 7!
The Year Nine orientation was both fun and meaningful for me. The activities we did were not only enjoyable but also helped me develop important skills in communication and teamwork.
One activity, for example, involved building the strongest and longest bridge, which really encouraged us to share our ideas and tap into our leadership abilities.
It also served as a great icebreaker, especially for those who were new, helping us connect with each other in a relaxed and engaging way.
